Three men followed Gage and another friend into the friend's apartment at the Retreat apartment complex, and when one of the men threatened Gage and his friend with a handgun, the Statesman reported.

Gage's friend and the gunman struggled with the weapon when it went off and wounded Gage.

The three men ran from the apartment and were chased by Gage and the friend, when Gage collapsed, the Statesman reported. He died at University Medical Center Brackenridge.

The men remain at large.

San Marcos police said similar home invasions have been reported recently, the Statesman reported. Most of the incidents occurred in apartment complexes where students reside and drugs may have been a factor in several of the reported robberies, although a motive has not been established in Sunday's home invasion.
