Man accused of beating girlfriend's 5-year-old son for opening Christmas presents early

OKMULGEE, Oklahoma – A man is behind bars on complaints of child abuse and child neglect after he allegedly beat his girlfriend's 5-year-old son for opening a Christmas present early.

The boy's mother told KJRH-TV in Oklahoma that her boyfriend was watching her kids while out Christmas shopping when she came home and found her son covered in bruises and welts.

The woman posted photos of the abuse to Facebook saying in part, "Words cannot explain seeing your baby like this and having no clue what happened. I ran to him like any mother would do crying, hugging him, begging what happened. 'Wesley hurt me bad mama,' is all he kept saying.”

The woman told KJRH-TV her boyfriend, Wesley McCollum, 25, said he was "trying to teach the boy a lesson" after the boy opened a Christmas present early.

The boy was taken to the hospital and police arrested McCollum.

The mother told KJRH she filed a protective order against her boyfriend.
