$4.4M donation to fund construction of 4th Ronald McDonald House in SA

SAN ANTONIO – A fourth Ronald McDonald House will be constructed in San Antonio, officials with Ronald McDonald House Charities announced Tuesday.

RMHC will receive $4.4 million of a $100 million donation from AbbVie, a global biopharmaceutical company. The company donated the money to RMHC charities nationwide.

The funding will allow for the construction of a fourth house on Charles Katz Drive in the Medical Center. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

The donation is the single largest donation to RMHC in its history.

RMHC of San Antonio received other large donations from groups including Valero Energy Foundation, totaling $750,000, and the Greehey Foundation, which donated $250,000.

The three existing Ronald McDonald Houses in San Antonio house children who are facing life-threatening illnesses and their families.

RMHC of San Antonio said that while they have been able to accommodate many families, 185 families in 2017 had to be turned away due to a lack of available beds.

The new 26,000-square-foot house will include 21 bedrooms, a children’s playroom, game room, family rooms, a meditation room, laundry facilities and more.

The house will also include five transplant rooms where transplant patients and medically-sensitive children will be able to be with their families.
