The House of Representatives passed a bill this week that makes it illegal to kill cats and dogs for human consumption.
The Dog and Cat Meat Trade Prohibition Act of 2018 makes it illegal to slaughter, transport, purchase, trade or possess dogs and cats for human consumption, Newsweek reports.

The bill was sponsored by two representatives from Florida.
Texas is one of 44 states where it is not explicitly illegal to kill dogs and cats for the purpose of eating them. Only California, Georgia, Hawaii, Michigan, New York and Virginia have laws against it, Newsweek reported.
The bill does make exception for Native American tribes who may slaughter cats or dogs for religious ceremonies.
The bill must be passed by the U.S. Senate and then signed by President Donald Trump before it would become law.
