Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex finally getting H-E-B stores
SAN ANTONIOS – H-E-B is taking its Primo Picks up north with an expansion into the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. The San Antonio-based grocery chain on Friday said two stores, one in Frisco and the other in Plano, are slated to open in fall 2022. Officials said details about the new stores will be given at groundbreaking ceremonies. This won’t be the grocery chain’s first presence in the North Texas Metroplex, though. Central Market stores opened in the area in 2001 and serve communities in Dallas, Plano, Southlake and Fort Worth.

Police: Texas radio host dead, ‘foul play’ not suspected
FRISCO, Texas – Police are investigating the death of a popular North Texas radio host but say they don’t suspect “foul play.”Officers in the suburb of Frisco were called to the home of Russ Martin early Saturday after a friend found him unresponsive. The 60-year-old host of “The Eagle” on KEGL-FM was pronounced dead at the scene and detectives are awaiting the results of an autopsy, according to a statement from the police department. “No foul play is suspected at this point in the investigation,” the statement said. “It’s with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of 97.1 The Eagle’s Russ Martin,” reads the statement posted online. “He will be dearly missed & we send our deepest condolences to his family & friends during this difficult time.”

Cowboys QB Dalton returns from concussion, COVID-19 setbacks
FRISCO, Texas – Dallas quarterback Andy Dalton has been cleared for practice after getting through the protocols for a concussion and COVID-19. Coach Mike McCarthy said Dalton participated in an informal practice Monday, the first day back for the Cowboys coming off their open week. Dalton got a concussion Oct. 25 at Washington on a hit that led to the ejection of linebacker Jon Bostic. Dalton was expected to be cleared from that when the 10th-year player was placed on the COVID-19 reserve list Nov. 2. The setbacks with Dalton, who replaced injured star Dak Prescott, led to the Cowboys starting four different quarterbacks in a span of five weeks.

Cowboys rookie CB Diggs out several weeks with broken foot
FRISCO, Texas – Dallas Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs will miss several weeks with a broken foot, a blow for a defense that was playing better in part because of the rookie’s contributions. The Cowboys announced Diggs' injury on their website Tuesday. The last-place Cowboys had just one interception on the season before Diggs' pair. The Cowboys gave up more points than in any five-game stretch to start the season in franchise history but have improved in recent weeks. The loss of Diggs comes as the Cowboys are hopeful that cornerback Chidobe Awuzie will return after missing seven games with a groin injury.

Texas teen wins $25,000 for creating possible treatment for COVID-19
FRISCO, Texas – A 14-year-old Texas teen won $25,000 for creating a potential treatment for the coronavirus, according to 3M. Anika Chebrolu, an eighth grader at Nelson Middle School in Frisco, Texas, won the 3M Young Scientist Challenge for discovering a drug that could help treat patients with COVID-19. She wanted to find a cure for influenza; however, that all changed after the COVID-19 pandemic hit, according to 3M. “I was drawn towards finding effective cures for Influenza disease after a severe bout of the infection last year,” Chebrolu said. Cowboys sign QB Gilbert from Browns after Prescott injury
FRISCO, Texas – The Dallas Cowboys signed quarterback Garrett Gilbert off Cleveland’s practice squad Tuesday after Dak Prescott’s season-ending ankle injury. Gilbert played at Texas and SMU before he was drafted by the Rams, who were then in St. Louis, in the sixth round in 2014. Dallas is the seventh organization for Gilbert, who has played in six games and thrown six passes in his career. The son of former NFL quarterback Gale Gilbert played parts of five games behind Baker Mayfield in Cleveland last season. Prescott's gruesome injury came in the third quarter against the Giants when his lower right leg got caught under defensive back Logan Ryan.

According to the magazine, Jerry Jones' team is also the most valuable franchise in the world. Rounding out the top 10 are the New York Jets ($3.55 billion), Chicago Bears ($3.52 billion), Washington ($3.5 billion), Philadelphia Eagles ($3.4 billion) and Houston Texans ($3.3 billion). On average, each team in the NFL is worth $3.05 billion, an increase of 7% from last year. And four teams (Cowboys, Giants, Patriots and Rams) are worth at least $4 billion.

Veteran DB Carr returns to Cowboys on their practice squad
FRISCO, Texas Veteran defensive back Brandon Carr has returned to the Dallas Cowboys as a member of their practice squad after starting every game the past 12 NFL seasons. Carr, who played the past three seasons with the Baltimore Ravens, was among 14 players the Cowboys signed to their practice squad Sunday. Before the Ravens, the 34-year-old defensive back Carr played five seasons for Dallas from 2012-16, after beginning his career with the Kansas City Chiefs from 2008-11. He has 702 tackles and 21 interceptions in 192 games, starting all 16 games every season he has played in the NFL. Two practice squad players each week can be promoted to the 53-man active roster and then move back to the practice squad the following week without going through waivers.

Cowboys cut key free agent addition in safety Clinton-Dix
FRISCO, Texas The Dallas Cowboys released safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix on Thursday, cutting ties before the first game with the free agent they hoped could help fill the void of several losses in the secondary. Clinton-Dix didn't make it to the regular season despite being reunited with first-year coach Mike McCarthy. Darian Thompson took over his first-team reps. Thompson started four games for the Cowboys last season. Clinton-Dix signed a one-year deal with $2.25 million guaranteed, but his release will give the Cowboys $1.5 million in salary cap relief. Byron Jones, who played safety earlier in his career, was another free agent departure, to Miami.

Cowboys newcomer Gerald McCoy out for season with leg injury
FRISCO, Texas Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Gerald McCoy is out for the season after tearing the quadriceps tendon in his right leg in the first padded practice of training camp Monday. Executive vice president of personnel Stephen Jones said McCoy would have surgery soon. Jones said McCoy was working against Antwaun Woods in individual drills when Woods stepped on his foot. McCoy was the first of four significant additions on the defensive line in free agency. Hill couldn't really break the rotation for the defensive line during a rough rookie season.

Man back from California is 1st coronavirus case near Dallas
FRISCO, Texas – A man who recently traveled to California received a presumptive positive test for the new coronavirus, making him the first person in Texas known to have potentially contracted the virus within the U.S., health officials said Monday. Collin County officials said in a statement that the Frisco man was in his late 30s and was in stable condition at home. For most people, the new coronavirus causes only mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough.
