GIRLS IN STEM: John Jay Science and Engineering Academy
SAN ANTONIO โ February 11 marks International Day of Women and Girls in Science. Itโs a day to celebrate women involved in STEM, and a day to encourage girls to think science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Although great strides have been made to include women in STEM related fields over the past few decades, inequality is still an issue. According to UNESCO, only 30% of all female students pursue a stem-related career. But here in San Antonio, weโre setting our girls up for success through specialized programs like the one at John Jay Science and Engineering Academy.

San Antonio teen wins national honors while trying to prove mom wrong
Sohn had some doubts, which sparked the idea of a science project to hopefully prove mom wrong. โI wanted to investigate the effects of probiotics, metformin on ischemia, reperfusion injuries on roundworms,โ Sohn said. โI treated the roundworms in three different timeframes: five days before hypoxia, two days before hypoxia and one day after hypoxia,โ Sohn said. So I used nitrogen through a chamber.โJoanna Sohn, a 13-year old STEM student from San Antonio has been named one of the most promising middle school STEM students in the country. (KSAT)Her science project is also testament to the young studentโs resiliency and creativity.

Federal bill to help veterans land STEM jobs in civilian sector
Many military members transitioning into the civilian workforce can find it difficult to land jobs in STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. A federal bill aiming to help veterans just passed the House and Senate. However, going through programs such as the STEM program or other programs the military had to offer, it helped me. โOur military vets and active-duty members have so much talent, so much knowledge that they can give to the civilian sector. The top slots are saved for active-duty members who will end their military service within six months, but all active-duty members and veterans are encouraged to apply.

Ignacia told KSAT that this money is so appreciated, since the school doesnโt have the latest technology and equipment for the students to use. If they win the grand prize, the school will receive $100,000 worth of technology and classroom supplies, as well as a trip to Washington D.C. for Ms. Kilgoreโs class.
Local students celebrate STEM by turning Legoland into their classroom
But some school districts are now emphasizing STEAM, it's the same as STEM, but it also encourages art. Friday is National STEAM or STEM day, an opportunity to emphasize the fields of learning and set up students for their futures. And like those STEM skills and stuff without necessarily knowing that they're learning, or having the pressure of learning and being in a fun environment." โItโs not in your typical school environment, where itโs in a fun setting and they can have fun learning and itโs not a worksheet. The idea is to teach STEM or STEAM with hands-on activities and workshops and these subjects aren't going away anytime soon.
