SAN ANTONIO – In celebration of the Mexican holiday Dia de los Muertos, residents on the city's West side are commemorating the day by honoring their own community.
The Esparanza Peace and Jusitice Center unveiled 20 new "fotobanners," enlarged historic photographs, on Nov. 1.
Graciela Sanchez, who is with the Esperanza Peace and Justice Center, said they decided to unveil the latest installment of the center's ongoing project, "En Aquellos Tiempo: Fotohistorias del Westside" as way of celebrating Dia de los Muertos.
Sanchez's grandfather is featured in one of the photographs from when he was a student at Brackenridge Elementary in 1906.
"Some of those people are still here," said Sanchez. "Some have passed on and being Nov. 1, we wanted to honor them as part of Dia de los Muertos."
The Esparanza Center also invited students from Brackenridge elementary to participate in the unveiling.
"We're working with the students to teach them about their history," said Sanchez. "And as they respect and learn about heir own history, they're going to feel pride and that will give them a sense of who they are and love themselves and then learn to love their community in a more profound way."
