Suspects in copper theft facing additional charges

Lee Lopez, Vidal Lopez accused of causing $100K in damage

Two men who are accused of trying to steal copper wiring from a building now face additional charges related to the damage they allegedly caused.

Lee Lopez, 40, and Vidal Lopez, 35, both have been charged with criminal mischief after San Antonio police said they caused more than $100,000 while trying to steal the wiring.

An arrest warrant affidavit stated that police found the suspects, along with a woman, inside the building after responding to a report of a burglary there Feb. 2.

They said they also found about 100 feet of copper wiring that had been rolled up, and a bag of tools on the floor of a utility room, the affidavit stated.

Police said the wiring had been taken from several electrical panels. They estimated the damage to the building at more than $100,000, the affidavit stated.

When officers questioned the suspects at the scene, they said they them they were hiding from another group who was stealing the wiring.

However, detectives said they found evidence that the suspects were to blame, the affidavit stated. All three suspects originally were arrested at the scene on charges of burglary.
