An off-duty Balcones Heights police officer was shot multiple times and died late Sunday night on the near Northwest Side, San Antonio police said.
The officer was identified as 29-year-old Julian Pesina, a seven-year-veteran of the department.
According to San Antonio police investigators, Pesina was shot just after 10 p.m. in the parking lot of a tattoo business in the 2800 block of Hillcrest Drive near Shadyview Drive.
"Best description we have so far (is that) two masked gunmen were waiting for him. He was shot multiple times," said San Antonio Police Sgt. Joe McKinney.
Officials said the shooting occurred in SAPD's jurisdiction, but Balcones Heights officers initially responded and immediately recognized Pesina.
"There was three of us actually, and right away we knew. Naturally, your first intent was to save his life, so CPR was started. We did all we could, called EMS, and he was transported to the hospital," said Balcones Heights Police Chief Henry Dominguez.
Pesina was taken to University Hospital and pronounced dead around 11 p.m, San Antonio police said.
Balcones Heights Police Chief Henry Dominguez said Pesina was a part owner of the business and called tattooing one of his passions.
Dominguez said Pesina was on duty earlier Sunday and finished his shift at 6 p.m.
San Antonio police are handling the investigation and have not released a possible motive.
