A qualified person must be 18 years of age or older, a registered voter and U.S. citizen, a resident of Texas at least one year and of District 6 for at least six months. The person cannot have been convicted of a felony, or if so convicted, met the outlined criteria of the district.

The application can be found online and should be submitted with a resume and proof of residency to the Office of Board Services at 141 Lavaca or the Governmental & Community Relations Department at the Cooper Annex, 1700 Tampico.

Hernandez, 66, was arrested earlier this month on federal charges in connection with a bribery and kickback scheme. She is accused of accepting cash, jewelry and travel from people working for a school district insurance carrier and a paid independent insurance consultant.

The person selected will serve the unexpired term that runs until May 2019 when elections will be held.
