BURNSVILLE – A 22-year-old from Minnesota is making history as what pageant directors believe to be the first person with Down Syndrome to compete in a Miss USA State pageant.

Mikayla Holmgren is competing for the Miss Minnesota USA crown this weekend.

According to her bio on Facebook, she is "the first woman with Down Syndrome to compete in any Miss USA state pageant."

Holmgreen attends Bethel University and "loves to express herself through her dancing."

She said she was inspired to compete because she wants the world to know that Down Syndrome doesn't define her.

Pageant finals are on Sunday.
