Neighbors heard shouting before West Side home invasion shootout

Incident occurred early Wednesday on South Brownleaf Street

SAN ANTONIO – A frightening shootout overnight woke up people living in a West Side neighborhood.

San Antonio police say an attempted home invasion that happened just after 1 a.m. Wednesday in the 800 block of South Brownleaf Street led to a homeowner exchanging gunfire with two intruders.

The suspects knocked on the home's door prior to kicking it in and forcing their way inside, police said. The homeowner was shot in the hand during a struggle with one of the suspects but was able to obtain one of their weapons and fired back, according to police.

Many neighbors in the cul-de-sac heard noises during the alleged incident, but were too afraid to talk on camera. One woman who didn't want to be identified said she heard someone shouting for money.

"They fired, and then they came outside, and then another shot was fired and then three more," she said.

One of the intruders was shot in the buttocks and back. The other sustained back and leg wounds. Police said the rest of the family got out of the house, but that one of the homeowner's daughters did have a gun pointed at her head during the incident. Three guns were recovered at the scene.

"That's scary because it's right next door," Rolando Aburto said. "So it could've happened here."

Neighbors are now staying vigilant and hoping crime doesn't return to the area.

All three who suffered gunshot wounds were transported to University Hospital. The two suspects are facing charges.
