ATASCOSA COUNTY, Texas – Road-weary counties like Atascosa await next year's vote on whether to tap into the state's Rainy Day Fund to help cover mounting repair costs.
"I think that the people that live in the Eagle Ford Shale will be almost unanimously for it," said Bill Carroll, Precinct 4 county commissioner.
However, Monday's transportation funding vote closing out the special session in Austin calls for a statewide proposition in areas that don't have heavy oilfield traffic.
"That's the problem," Carroll said.
The vote planned for November 2014 proposes using $1.2 billion annually for needed road repairs.
The amount falls short of the $4 billion estimated by the Texas Department of Transportation.
"It's band-aid, let's put it that way," Carroll said.
A portion of oil and gas revenues go into the Rainy Day Fund.
