American swimmer Maya DiRado won gold in the women's 200-meter backstroke final Friday night for her fourth medal of the Rio Games.
Katinka Hosszu of Hungary won silver.
It was also the fourth medal in Rio for Hosszu, who won golds in the 400m individual medley, 100m backstroke and 200m individual medley between Saturday and Wednesday after competing in three Olympics without winning a single medal.
Appearing in her first, and what she says will be her last, Olympics, DiRado has made a big impression, also winning silver in the 400m individual medley and bronze in the 200m individual medley to go along with the gold she won as part of the U.S. 4x200-meter freestyle relay team.
The 23-year-old Northern California native and Stanford graduate plans to retire after she's done competing in Rio and begin work as a business analyst for a management consulting firm in Atlanta.
American Missy Franklin, the 2012 Olympic champion in the event, failed to qualify for the final in Thursday's semifinals. It was the second time that Franklin, who won four golds and one bronze, in her Olympic debut at age 17 at the 2012 London Games, missed the final of an event in Rio. The other came in the 200m freestyle. However, Franklin also won a gold in Rio for swimming in the prelims of the 4x200-meter freestyle relay.
