Methodist Children's Hospital provides high-tech distractions for young patients

Gaming devices helps bring smiles to children's faces

SAN ANTONIO – Methodist Children's Hospital has a technology room filled with gaming devices, including Play Station Virtual Reality.

"For the kid, it means the world for them to have someone they can talk to and hang out with," said Alexander Pereira, patient technology specialist at the hospital.

Pereira visits children in their rooms and takes a cart that has all the games and devices.

"I'll go in, talk to the kid. Make sure there's no doctors coming to visit. There's no procedures getting in the way," he said.

Jesus Garcia, 8, has spent months at the hospital, but Pereira paid a special visit with the youngster to take his mind off of his hospitalization.

"I think it was fun," Jesus said.

Pereira said the high-tech distraction is a healthy escape for kids.

"Giving them a chance to get away from the hospital situation they are in," Pereira said.

The tech program, which opened last year, is funded by Child's Play Charity and Game Changer Charity.
