US 281 South lanes reopen

TxDOT plans nightly closures through Aug. 26

SAN ANTONIO – A little more than 48 hours after a trailer hit a bridge on U.S. 281, closing all southbound lanes at Henderson Pass, the lanes reopened just before 5 p.m. Friday.

A truck hauling a raised trailer struck the bridge Wednesday afternoon. It had been closed to traffic for years, but the crumbling overpass was unsafe for passing traffic.

Crews completed a temporary fix Friday, allowing the southbound lanes to reopen. However, the two left lanes of northbound U.S. 281 which lead to the connector ramps for Loop 1604 will remain closed.

The Texas Department of Transportation plans to permanently remove the damaged beam in the next week. To prepare for the that, TxDOT said there may be nightly closures. A full closure of U.S. 281 in that area is planned for Friday, Aug. 23, so that the beam can be removed.

That work is expected to be completed by the morning commute on Monday, Aug. 26.
