UTHSC receives $22.7M grant toward expanding scientific research

NIH awarded grant to UTHSC and 11 South Texas partners

The University of Texas Health Science Center and 11 South Texas health partners received a $22.7 million grant on Tuesday.

A component of the National Institutes of Health called the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences, announced the multi-million dollar Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) to the Health Science Center and a consortium of South Texas partner institutions.

Leaders of UTHSC said the most important part of the grant is that it is an infrastructure grant, and not project-specific.

"It allows us to promote translational and clinical research across a variety of diseases and settings, so it's not one of those things that's directed at one specific disease or project, but can have a broad impact in a number of areas," said Dr. Robert Clark, an assistant vice president at UTHSC.

The award is for five years and it runs through 2018.

The Health Science Center also said the money helps facilitate scientific research being translated into medical use.
