More than 200 Home Depot employees spent Tuesday volunteering their time at a local VFW.
Putting their knowledge of home improvement to use, the volunteers helped renovate VFW Startz Memorial Post 8800, which is located near Canyon Lake in Startzville.
"From Sept. 11 to Nov. 11, we do our Celebration of Service. We do 350 projects to honor our nation's veterans," said Valerie Cox, a field specialist for the Home Depot Foundation.
One of those projects chosen by the foundation was VFW Post 8800, which was in need of major repairs.
"We have quite a few people that are 70 to 80 years old, so to come out and do the hands-on stuff anymore is kind of hard for them," said the commander of VFW Post 8800, Kathy Shultz.
"What they do for the community is awesome. They need a little help, so the Home Depot stepped in and decided we're going to help them build whatever they need (at) no charge," said Jon Lewis, a volunteer, Home Depot employee and veteran.
A new wheelchair ramp was added, along with a deck, new paint and landscaping.
More than 200 volunteers showed up to help, representing every Home Depot in the San Antonio area.
"We're all volunteers," said Lewis. "Nobody told us we had to come out here. We wanted to do this for our VFW, our community and our veterans."
