Man arrested 5 months after deadly hit-and-run

Gustavo Rodriguez, 22, faces murder, theft charges

The Bexar County Sheriff's Office Fugitive Apprehension Unit arrested 22-year-old Gustavo Rodriguez in connection with a deadly hit-and-run that happened Nov. 1, 2013.

Rodriguez faces murder and theft charges after the crash that killed 63-year-old Anita Ortiz.

"The suspect in this case was in a stolen vehicle. He was fleeing from police, and shortly thereafter, he ran into the victim's car, killing her, and then he fled from the scene," said San Antonio police Officer Roger Zuniga.

The crash happened at the intersection of East Formosa and Pleasanton Road.

San Antonio police said investigators increased efforts to track down Rodriguez on Tuesday, and with the help of the Sheriff's Office, the search was successful.

"Homicide detectives issued a warrant for the arrest of this individual. We reached out to the media to broadcast his information, and get it out there, and apparently he was picked up some time last night by the Bexar County Sheriff's (Office)," Zuniga said.

Sheriff's deputies arrested Rodriguez in the 200 block of Lorita around 8 p.m. Tuesday.

He had a stolen motorcycle and a stolen handgun in his possession, deputies said.

A family friend of Ortiz said the arrest offered some comfort, but the family still had questions about how the crash happened.
