Fort Sam Houston soldier killed in training exercise identified

Victim identified as Hernaldo Beltran of El Paso

The U.S. Army has released the name of a Fort Sam Houston soldier who was killed in an exercise.

The victim was identified as Spc. Hernaldo Beltran Jr., 24, an Army radio operator from El Paso. Beltran was assigned to the 56th Signal Battalion at Fort Sam.

Beltran died Tuesday when a large tree branch fell on a group of soldiers working an engineer project in Los Limones, Guatemala. Three other Soldiers sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

"Our thoughts, prayers and heartfelt condolences are with Spc. Beltran's family," said Lt. Col. Nicole Morris, commander of the 56th Signal Battalion. "Our unit mourns the loss of Hernaldo. He was a tremendous Soldier and his commitment to our Army was unwavering. We've lost a member of our family and we'll never forget him."
