Fiery crash leads to drunken driving charges

Car flies over median, nearly hits couple standing with baby

A driver was arrested on the Northwest Side Wednesday night after police said he nearly hit a baby when his car slammed into an SUV.

Police say the driver was going 80 mph on the access road of Loop 410 around 10:20 p.m.

Investigators said his car hit an SUV so hard it jumped an island and landed all the way in the opposite lanes of Evers.

The car nearly hit a couple who were standing on the corner with a baby, then crashed into a pole right next to them.

The car rolled and landed on its back tires, then caught fire.

Passersby ran to help and ended up pulling the driver out.

The driver and passenger in that car were taken to University Hospital for treatment. That passenger is listed in critical condition.

The driver is now facing drunken driving charges.

The people in the SUV were not hurt.
