Police: Victim robbed after giving Jonathan Chapa ride

SAN ANTONIO – A 33-year-old man is accused of robbing an elderly man whom he had asked for a ride.

Jonathan Chapa was arrested Thursday on a charge of aggravated robbery stemming from the Aug. 9 incident.

According to an arrest warrant affidavit, an 82-year-old man called police to his home, saying that he had been robbed after giving two strangers a ride.

The affidavit stated that the man told police he was leaving his bank that morning in the 3500 block of SW Military when Chapa and another man approached him and asked for a ride.

The man said he drove them to what turned out to be an abandoned building in the 1200 block of Crystal StreeT.

He said Chapa, who was in the back seat, suddenly grabbed him from behind, held a hard object to his head and threatened to kill him if he didn't hand over his money, the affidavit stated.

The man then drove to his home and called police.

The affidavit stated that officers spotted Chapa in the area of the robbery this past Tuesday and arrested him on outstanding warrants.

While he was in custody, Chapa confessed to robbing the elderly man, the affidavit stated.
