SAFD: Motel fire started in barricaded room

2 arrested in NE Side motel fire

SAN ANTONIO – Police arrested two suspects on suspicion of arson in a Northeast Side motel fire.

The fire started around 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the Super 8 Motel off Interstate 35 and Brewster Street. A total of 37 units responded to the fire, which started in a second-floor room.

San Antonio Fire Department Chief Charles Hood said firefighters tried to break into the room, but the doorway was blocked by furniture stacked inside.

"That is absolutely where it started. It looks like they (suspects) jumped out of the window because the front door was barricaded so their only means of getting out was to jump out of the window. We have no reports of injuries to them but our arson units have questioned them here," Hood said.

The two suspects were seen running from the scene during the fire and were taken into custody.

Arson investigators believe they may have set the fire.

One firefighter was taken to the hospital with minor burns.

At least two motel units sustained heavy damage.
