Man killed in apparent street race crash identified

Chris Osborn, 26, dies after crashing Corvette

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio police have identified Chris Osborn, 26, as the driver of a Corvette who was killed Thursday in an apparent street race crash on the city's North Side.

San Antonio police spokesman Officer Doug Greene said the Corvette and a Cadillac CTS were at a stop light in the 18000 block of Bulverde Road at 6:50 a.m. He said both cars took off to the south when the light turned green.

"The orange Corvette was at the traffic light next to what we believe was a black four-door vehicle. When the light turned green, both of them revved their engine and appeared to be racing, according to witnesses. The driver of the orange Corvette lost control and collided with a pole," Greene said.

Osborn was pronounced dead at the scene, Greene said.

"It's never a good idea to be speeding on local roadways, because you're putting not only yourself but other drivers in danger," Greene said. "People who like to engage in racing should do that in a more controlled environment."

Detectives want to get a statement from the other driver, who did not stop, Greene said.

Police said alcohol does not appear to have been a factor in the crash.
