City offering incentives to get ride-share drivers verified through SAPD

Drivers being offered gift cards, other prizes

SAN ANTONIO – Ride-share drivers are getting the chance to cash in on safety.

The first 1,000 drivers to become verified drivers through San Antonio police will receive a $25 gift card and a chance to win hundreds more in a raffle.

"Sooner or later it’s going to be mandatory,” said Larry Abatte, an Uber and Lyft driver. “Just (to) give people piece of mind."

Becoming “SAPD Verified” includes getting a free 10-fingerprint background check by the Police Department.

"My No. 1 concern is safety for everyone. As ride-share drivers choose to sign up for this incentive you are telling your customers that safety is important you too," police Chief William McManus said.

Nearly 450 drivers have now applied to become verified, while 295 have been issued verification cards.

"The more people that are verified the safer people feel and it gives a little bit more legitimacy to the drivers," said Si Millican, a part-time Uber driver.
