Divers pulled the body of a 27-year-old man from the Guadalupe River on Sunday.

The man, whose name has not been released, died of an accidental drowning, the New Braunfels Police Department said in a news release.

Officers and fire officials were called to the banks of the river about 4:45 p.m., near the 700 block of Interstate 35, after learning of a man who went underwater and never resurfaced, police said.

Several witnesses told investigators that the man swam across the river successfully, but when he tried to return to the other side, he got a cramp and went under.

Crews searched the shore, then launched boats and deployed a dive team.

The man’s body was found about 6:30 p.m., around the same area he went under the water.

His name has not been released. Police said the man was from Colombia.
