Scouts place American flags at headstones of fallen service members

SAN ANTONIO – With Memorial Day weekend upon us, some are honoring the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts placed American flags at the headstones of fallen service members Friday at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.

"It's important that these gravestones are not just names, they're lives, they're mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters to somebody out there, and if those people can't be here to put a flag there, then we will be," said Charlie Whelan, of Troop 405.

"I want to recognize all those who died for us in battles for our country, so I always come out here and do this with my dad, my brother and my sister," said Fiona Whelan, a Girl Scout.

This is the eighth year Troop 405 out of St. Luke Catholic Church has planted the flags there.
