District 6 councilman makes effort to bring representation out of office, into neighborhoods

City Councilman Greg Brockhouse calls for input on SAWS, CPS Energy exec pay

SAN ANTONIO – District 6 City Councilman Greg Brockhouse spent Friday morning block walking through the Tara neighborhood on the West Side, taking his message of "back to basics" to voters.

"We can't always expect the citizen to do all the work to get to us," Brockhouse said.

Brockhouse’s office implemented a new program Friday called District 6 to You in an effort to take his representation out of the office and into neighborhoods.

Members of the San Antonio Police Department, Animal Care Services and Code Compliance knocked on doors along with Brockhouse.

One of the councilman's biggest priorities includes a proposed reduction in property tax rates.

"For me, property tax relief is people who own their home can put their money back into their home and not worry about someone else, like the government, an appraisal office or Bexar County Appraisal District, playing with their values and, in essence, taking more tax dollars from them," Brockhouse said. "So it's a broken process, and I think we need to address it."

Brockhouse also filed a resolution with the city clerk's office that would allow councilmembers to have input on the pay structure and bonuses awarded to executives with the San Antonio Water System and CPS Energy.

"Right now, the City Council has no vote on SAWS or CPS Energy CEO bonuses," Brockhouse said. "I think that's a broken process, and I think it's not transparent. They are owned, municipally owned, utilities."

The District 6 office said it could be by October before the resolution is discussed by the city's Governance Committee.
