Family wants new information on murder case of loved one killed last July

Mark Macias killed almost a year ago

SAN ANTONIO – Almost a year after his death, the family of 25-year-old Mark Macias is still fighting for answers and hopes justice will be served. With no arrests in the murder case, the family says any information from the public could make all the difference.

Macias’ daughter holds onto the tags Macias got while serving in the Army. He was deployed to Afghanistan for a year and a half.

The tags are the only thing Macias’ 5-year-old daughter has left of him.

Macias’ family said he was a man who just wanted to help others.

“He had invited someone to live with him. This lady was homeless, didn't have a place to go. That's just the kind of person he was. If he could help you, he was going to help you,” said Illeana Moreno, Macias’ cousin.

Moreno worries that her cousin’s kindness may have given some people the wrong impression.

“I do believe some people would take advantage of him,” Moreno said.

On July 1, 2016, someone shot Macias several times next to his grandfather’s south Bexar County property.

“He wouldn't be out there unless it was someone he knew,” Moreno said.

In the two weeks after Macias’ death, people broke into his residence twice and stole all of his belongings.

Moreno believes her cousin was targeted.

“What he did have, they took,” she said.

For her niece’s sake, Moreno pleads with the community for even the smallest pieces of information.

“Where he was at before it happened, anyone he talked to, anyone he saw that day, just anything,” Moreno said.

The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office on Friday said it does not have any new information on the case. Detectives are asking the public for help with any leads. Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office homicide unit at 210-335-6070.
