When firefighters arrived, heavy smoke and flames were coming from one of the apartments. Several others were damaged by smoke and water.
"They made a quick attack, got it knocked down. Did a primary search, didn't find anyone in there," said Joe Arrington, a spokesman with the San Antonio Fire Department. "Crews are conducting a secondary search right now, looking for anything that was there. We don't feel that anyone was inside the building."
Fire investigators are trying to figure out what caused the fire. The San Antonio Fire Department is also working with apartment management and the Red Cross to make sure those affected have a warm place to stay Wednesday night.
