Letter reveals alleged racial comments made by UIW president

Lou Agnese allegedly made comments during luncheon

SAN ANTONIO – A letter sent by unnamed students to KSAT 12 News on Thursday night reveal alleged racial comments made by University of the Incarnate Word President Lou Agnese.

The letter that was sent to the founding dean of the university's school of physical therapy said Agnese made the comments at a campus luncheon Aug. 22. (Click here to read first part of letter.)

Among the alleged racial remarks Agense made called attention to a black woman who wasn't wearing the school's colors. "Well, you're lucky you're black, so you are in a way wearing cardinal black," the letter said. (Click here to read second part of letter.)


The letter also said that Agnese told a Native American student that "Indian red skin color would also count as wearing cardinal red."

University officials said Thursday that Agnese is on leave and that "it doesn't condone conduct and comments that are contrary to its mission."

Agnese hasn't commented on the allegations.
