SAFD Chief Hood: 'We had our worst day'

“It was very heartwarming to see our communities rally behind our brotherhood to help these families in their time of need,” Live Oak Fire Department Lt. Chris Everett said in a statement.

The money has already been donated to the Scott Deem Memorial Fund and the Brad Phipps and Robert Vasquez Benefit Account.

Deem was among dozens of firefighters who battled the massive fire at a shopping center on May 18.

Fire Chief Charles Hood said Deem and firefighters Robert Vasquez and Brad Phipps became trapped when part of the building collapsed around them.

Vasquez and Phipps were rescued, but crews were unable to reach Deem in time.

The departments would like to thank the citizens who donated their time and money to help. It could not have been possible without them.
