SAPD officer arrested on DWI charge

Officer Robert Romo, 26, passed another car on should of Loop 410

A San Antonio police officer was arrested overnight on suspected drunken driving charges.

Officer Robert Romo, 26, a four-year veteran of the police department who works out of Central Patrol, was arrested after an incident on Loop 410 near San Pedro around 1:30 a.m. on Friday.

He's accused of passing another car on the shoulder of the freeway.

When he was pulled over, the arresting officer could not get anyone to roll down the window of the darkly tinted truck.

When someone finally did, there was no one in the driver's seat. But one man was in the passenger's seat and Romo was in the back seat.

He took a breath test and was arrested on a charge of driving while intoxicated. As of Friday afternoon, was still in jail.

"The fact of the matter is that he was driving ... while intoxicated," said San Antonio police Chief Bill McManus. "That is an issue that is very, very serious for us."

The passenger was arrested on a charge of public intoxication.

McManus said this is another example of the DWI problem here.

"We do not try to cover this up, I can assure the public of that," he said. "Any time one of our officers breaks the law (or) commits a crime, we're going to take the appropriate action."

Romo was on injured leave and is now on administrative leave.

"It's concerning for not only the administration of a department, it's concerning for every member in that department," McManus said. "The public's trust is paramount to us and our ability to do our job. So we will handle it appropriately."
