Two people arrested in connection with stolen ashes

Ashes returned to widow

SAN ANTONIO – Josephine Duckett feels lucky to hold a box containing the ashes of her late husband, Andre Spivey, after they were stolen from her home.

"He's back home with me. He's back home with me," Duckett said.

She said police called her at 1 a.m. to tell her they had recovered several items, including her husband's ashes.

"Why would they take it is what I want to know. Why?" Duckett said.

Darlene Vasquez, 34, and Robert Garcia Jr., 54, have been taken into custody, police said.

The pair broke into Duckett's mobile home Thursday afternoon in the 13700 block of Judson Road and stole several items, police said.

"Why take somebody's ashes? You would think that they would open it to see what was in there, and then say, 'Back up.' But why did they take it?" Duckett said.

Although her husband's ashes are back, Duckett is still concerned for her and her family's safety.

"My grandkids and my daughter, it's horrible. They don't want to stay here anymore. I don't. We feel unsafe," she said. "I know they caught the people who did it. I don't know them, but why would they take him?"
