Community rallies to foster animals set to be euthanized

ACS says 600+ animals surrendered this week

SAN ANTONIO – Hundreds of people showed up at Animal Care Services Saturday to foster or adopt an animal.

"I have five other babies at home. So, I'm probably going to take five more kittens and probably a couple of young dogs," Staci Shults said.

The community support comes a day after ACS made a public plea for help. The shelter feared they would have to start euthanizing animals after taking in more than 600 dogs and cats this week.

The shelter said it has been over two years since it has had to euthanize a healthy puppies for space.

"We stopped at three (kittens) and we will only have them for about a month. It'll be hard to give them back but it's nice to help them," Kate Terrell said.

Despite the turnout the problem continues. ACS outreach coordinator Lyssa Macmillan says another 50 puppies were dropped Saturday morning.

"Anyone who ever has a chance or thinks they have an opening in their schedule, an empty bath tub, just an extra room even just a box in a quiet part of their house that can take puppies or kittens and bottle feed them for a few days or a couple of weeks that’s the most helpful," Macmillan said.

ACS is not scheduled to euthanize any animals but says the need for community support continues.

Anyone looking to foster or adopt a pet can visit shelter Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. or email ACS at ACSRescue-Foster@sanantonio.gov.
