SAN ANTONIO – Several residents on the city's South Side got a frightening wake up call in the form of an 18-wheeler crashing into parked cars before hitting a home, San Antonio police said Thursday.
The accident was reported around 4:45 a.m. in the 400 block of Hawthorne Street, located right off of Interstate 35 and not far from Division Avenue.
According to police, the 18-wheeler had exited the interstate and went off the road through a man's front yard before hitting a car and then taking out a wheelchair ramp.
The big rig also clipped the edge of a home, hitting just a few inches from where someone was sleeping, police said. The 18-wheeler stopped just short of hitting a second home.
A resident of one of the houses said they woke to hear the loud crash and witnessed the 18-wheeler coming off the exit ramp.
The driver got out of the truck and appeared to be dazed but did not have any visible injuries before being checked out at the scene, the witness said. The 38-year-old driver of the big rig told police he doesn't remember what happened.
No one in either house was hurt.
Police said the big rig was not carrying any cargo when the 18-wheeler first clipped a disabled big rig on the side of the road just South of Malone Street.
