AAA predicts biggest Thanksgiving rush in 9 years

Improving economy, dropping gas prices fuel travel

SAN ANTONIO – If you're headed to grandma's house for turkey and pumpkin pie, you'll have plenty of company on the road. AAA is predicting 48.7 million people will travel this year for Thanksgiving, the most in nearly a decade.

Laura McCrary-Blue will be stuffing her SUV.

"We have family, memaw and pawpaw, in Oklahoma," she said. "So we're going up and taking Thanksgiving dinner to them."

AAA expects about 1 million more cars on the roads this year compared to last year. A boost in consumer confidence and palatable gas prices are fueling the pilgrimages. Gas prices have dropped for 10 days straight.

That's a blessing to Vera Frierson who will be driving, first to Lufkin, then on to Florida.

"Going through the state of Texas, it's not so bad," she said of the gas prices.

Texas has some of the cheapest gas in the nation, an average of $1.96 per gallon. San Antonio is paying an average $1.91 per gallon a week before the holiday, roughly the same as last year.

Some of the cheapest gas in town, though, is on the Northeast Side of town. The HEB and Murphy USA on FM 78 were both selling for $1.74 per gallon Tuesday morning.

Barring anything unusual to disrupt supplies, analysts say prices should continue to slide into winter.

Holiday planes will be packed, too.

Amanda Jalomo is flying her children to Wyoming to see their dad who is stationed with the Air Force.

"We probably won't see him Christmas, so we're going to go big," she said.
