COMAL COUNTY, Texas – As the new school year approaches, Comal Independent School District will be starting this year with a brand new elementary school.
On Aug. 27, school administrators are expecting more than 500 students to fill the hallways and start the school year at Indian Springs Elementary.
"We're very excited about this learning space," said Andrew Kim, Comal ISD superintendent.
Indian Springs Elementary is Comal ISD's newest campus and is expected to give some relief to Bill Brown and Johnson Ranch elementary schools, which Kim said have had overcrowding issues because of all the growth along the Highway 281 corridor.
"You can see by the community of Indian Springs and this area, there are quite a bit of new homes that have developed, as well as new families that are moving in," said Kim. "And, we want to welcome them to this new campus."
The new state of the art campus boasts several energy saving features, including natural lighting in the library and hallways, rainwater harvesting silos and a living roof that not only cools the building, but provides another teaching tool.
"One of the things we're going to be doing is having our garden on top of the roof," said Marisa Wulfsberg, Indian Springs Elementary principal. "And we're working already with 3rd-, 4th-, and 5th-grade teachers in coming up with activities where students are going to see the process."
And while there is still some construction going on outside of the building, Wulfsberg said the inside of the school is complete and ready to go and that they are all ready to welcome students and parents.
