SAN ANTONIO – A judge is expected to rule Monday in an eviction hearing connected to an ongoing dispute at Woodlawn Christian Church on West Grammercy Place.

A LULAC group that rents office space in the church is facing eviction for holding an unauthorized toy drive. They are also accused of being behind on rent.

The group is fighting other Woodlawn Church members for ownership of the building which has been closed.

An official of the organization that oversees the church says the two groups claiming ownership of the church are irrelevant.

Reverend Dani Cartwright, Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) regional minister and president, said the two opposing groups were working together at one point, and illegally removed more than a dozen elderly members from the congregation.

The elderly members have worshiped at the church for nearly 75 years and want to close the ministry.  Cartwright said the vote that removed the elderly members from the congregation was illegal under the church's bylaws.

Last year, Steve Huerta of LULAC and the former board members filed a lawsuit to keep the church open. The case is still pending.
