Man accused of pulling gun during basketball game at Gold's Gym

Police: Worker at Gold's Gym IDs Phillip Bernal as gunman

SAN ANTONIO – A 34-year-old suspect identified as Phillip Bernal is accused of loosing his cool on the basketball court at his gym and pointing a gun at another player.

Police with the University of Texas Health Science Center responded to Gold's Gym in the 7400 block of Merton Minter Boulevard last Thursday for a report of a fight between two men, according to an arrest affidavit.

The affidavit stated that several witnesses, including one who is a police officer, told the responding officers that one of the men involved in the fight had pulled out a gun and pointed it at the other.

Police said the incident also was captured on surveillance video.

The affidavit stated that the video shows a man, later identified as Bernal, playing basketball, then going to his gym bag and removing an item which he placed into his pocket.

It stated that Bernal walked over and began talking to another player, then pulled the item out of his pocket and pointed it at the other man. The item, police said, was a gun.

Witnesses told police the man with the gun later changed his clothes and left the gym, the affidavit stated.

A gym worker told officers she remembered checking in the suspected gunman, and was able to give police his name and address from the gym's records, the affidavit stated.

Bernal was arrested this weekend on charges of deadly conducting and unlawful carrying of a weapon.
