SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio City Council approved the sale of a 1.69-acre tract of land adjacent the Hays Street bridge on Thursday.
The Alamo Beer Company plans to use the land for a micro-brewery and restaurant with seating on the bridge.
The sale price was $295,000 and included tax incentives for developers.
"I support this project because it has a number of significant benefits," said District 2 Councilmember Ivy Taylor.
Among them, she said, was that it represented private investment in the East side and it would created a resident and tourist destination.
Jobs are also a plus, said Taylor.
"The project does create jobs which, we've been told, will be at a living wage," she said.
Project opponents argue that the sale, which includes use of the bridge by the brewery and an adjacent restaurant, takes away public space.
The mayor said the project is a good investment.
"This project truly does enhance the experience of the neighborhood," said Mayor Julian Castro. "At the same time, it can be a catalyst for future investment on the East side."
