Demand pleases farmers market vendors

Customers head to Pearl for homegrown products

SAN ANTONIO – The demand for healthy, locally grown and produced food is at an all-time high.

The farmers market at the Pearl is now expanding to meet that demand.

Today marks the first Sunday for the market, and buyers were plenty.

More than two dozen vendors set up booths and tents to handle the crowds of customers seeking local products.

Rivery Whey Creamery vendor Kathleen Leathem said the number of people who showed up at the farmers market says a lot about the community.

"It tells us people are really interested in what they're eating, where it comes from, what kind of product it is, and what it has in it," she said.

The Sunday farmers market is also an important way for vendors to sell their products because many have no other way to reach customers.

The Pearl market is open Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
