Volunteers needed to help rebuild Wimberley after Memorial Day weekend flooding

Long-term recovery could take 18 to 24 months

WIMBERLEY – Seven weeks have passed since storms ripped through Wimberley, and its surrounding areas.

The rebuilding process has been anything but easy. Volunteers have come and gone but there is still much rebuilding to do.

Caroline Rolling credits volunteers with helping to salvage her home and even providing moral support.

"The volunteers that have come haven't just come to work they've come and given me hugs and they brought me lunch or a joke and we would laugh," said Rolling whose home was completely gutted.

When the storms first hit, Rolling estimates there was 20 to 70 volunteers a day but that number is now down to only one or two a day.

"Everyone is returning to their normal lives, nothing is normal for me so I'm relying on when the volunteers can show up," Rolling said.

Courtney Goss, a volunteer coordinator at the Wimberley Response Center, says long-term recovery could take another 18 to 24 months.

"If we could have 30 volunteers a a day that would be amazing. We still have over 400 homes that were affected and 70 that were completely taken off their slabs," said Goss.

Goss say adults and children 14 and up are welcome to volunteer.

If you or anyone else would like to volunteer their time you can do so by calling the Wimberley Response center at (512)-715-4134 or emailing them at wimberleyresponse@gmail.com.
