Drunken driver gets 10 years in fatal wreck

John Stinziano accepts responsibility in fatal accident

His voice often choked with emotion, John Stinziano, 25, admitted that while driving drunk, he killed Karla Viesca.

The woman's car was cut completely in half after Stinziano's car slammed into it broadside at the intersection of Blanco Road and Loop 1604 on Oct. 17, 2010.

On Thursday afternoon, Stinziano was sentenced to 10 years in prison for the charge of intoxication manslaughter and two years probation on a charge of intoxication assault.

According to the medical examiner who testified in Stinziano's trial on Wednesday, Viesca was killed almost instantly.

"I know I was the driver of that car and I know that I killed Karla Viesca," Stinziano testified during his trial Thursday.

As his trial began earlier this week, Stinziano pleaded guilty to intoxication manslaughter and intoxication assault charges.

Immediately following the accident, witness said Stinziano claimed he was not driving and said his girlfriend Kaylie McKaskill, a passenger, was driving.

She was seriously hurt but survived.

"I'm ashamed of being liar and placing the blame on somebody else for something that I obviously did," Stinziano told the jury.
