Child injury suspect sought by Edgewood ISD police turns self in

Gary Alvarez wanted in beating of 8-year-old boy

SAN ANTONIO – A man who was wanted in connection with the beating of an 8-year-old boy turned himself in Friday, Edgewood ISD officials said.

District police had been looking for Gary Alvarez, 44. He is accused of hitting and choking his girlfriend’s 8-year-old son, as well as shoving his hand down the boy’s throat. The alleged abuse came in reaction to a call from the child’s school about him misbehaving, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.

The affidavit said school officials learned of the boy's obvious injuries when he came to school Feb. 17. Alvarez told staff members the boy was injured while playing football.

Staff members didn't buy Alvarez's reasoning and notified district police, according to the affidavit.

The boy's mother, Rosemarie Luna, 44, who is a nurse, was arrested Tuesday for failing to get the boy medical attention. She was charged with injury to a child by omission.
