Lightning strike starts fire in Atascosa County

Fire Department letting fire burn out on its own; does not pose threat

ATASCOSA COUNTY – The Jourdanton Volunteer Fire Department responded to an early morning fire on Wednesday, the result of a lightning strike that hit a water tank used in the fracking industry.

The fire was reported around 5:30 a.m. on Highway 97, about 5 miles west of Jourdanton in Atascosa County.

Fire officials said the lightning strike hit the salt water tanks that hold a mixture of water and oil, a mixture that is offloaded from trucks. The tanks hold that water for disposal.

Firefighters said they are allowing the fire to burn out on its own, but that they continue to make sure the fire does not spread.

Firefighters at the scene reiterated the fire does not pose a danger to the local community.
