Man used someone else's name to open bank accounts, steal $18k, police say

Anthony Arredondo, 45, accused of identity theft

SAN ANTONIO – Anthony Arredondo, 45, is accused of stealing someone's identity and opening multiple accounts at a bank resulting in the theft of more than $18,000, according to an arrest affidavit.

Arredondo was arrested Tuesday on a charge of tampering with a government document as well as a forgery charge related to a separate case.

The arrest warrant affidavit said that the bank account came to light in August after a man filed a complaint about identity theft with the Bexar County Sheriff's Office.

San Antonio police said they were notified that someone had used that man's identity to obtain a credit card, auto loan and line of credit from a far West Side bank. As a result, the bank lost more than $18,000, the affidavit said.

Police said a fraud specialist for the bank contacted them later with the name of a possible suspect. The affidavit said that she found one transaction where money was wired to a credit card in Arredondo's name.

It said that investigators then compared Arredondo's drivers license photo to surveillance photos from the bank and realized he was the person posing as the identity theft victim.

The affidavit said that police also found a phony drivers license which featured Arredondo's photo with the victim's name and other personal information.
