Family seeking answers after teen found dead in backseat of SUV

Jose Martinez Jr. found shot to death Monday

SAN ANTONIO – The family of a teen shot to death on the South Side earlier this week are still looking for answers.

Preparations are now underway for a vigil for Jose Martinez Jr.

Police found Martinez, 16, dead in the backseat of an SUV with the windows broken out early Monday in the 300 block of Kyle Street.

His family said they don't know what happened in the final hours before his death.

"I couldn't believe it,” Rubi Martinez, Jose’s aunt, said. “My nephew was never in trouble.  He was a good kid. It just felt like a dream."

Officer said they found a person about five blocks away who said he met up with a group of people to buy pot and the group tried to rob him.

That man also told police he heard gunfire and ran.

Martinez's family doesn't believe the teen would be involved in drug activity. A vigil for Martinez will take place Monday at 8:30 p.m. near the corner of Kyle and Berlin streets where the he was killed.

But Rubi had a message to her nephew's killer.

"Don't leave us hurting," she said.

Anyone with information is asked to call San Antonio police.
