SAN ANTONIO – A man was critically wounded early Friday after he got into a shootout with three police officers, San Antonio police officials said.
According to a police news release, an officer tried to stop the man around 1 a.m. at Interstate 35 and W.W. White Road because he was driving erratically.
The driver sped away, but the officer was able to get the car's license plate number.
A police helicopter, which was already up for an unrelated incident, followed the car to the 3300 block of West Woodlawn, where three officers were waiting for him, police said.

The driver pulled up in front of a home at 3322 West Woodlawn, where the officer approached the driver and ordered him out of the car, police said. The driver, armed with a handgun, got out of the car and immediately opened fire on the officers, police said.
The three officers returned fire, striking the man multiple times, police said. He was taken to University Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.
No officers were injured. The three officers who shot at the suspect are a 5-year veteran, a 4-year veteran and a probationary officer, police said.
The man, believed to be between 19 and 22 years old, faces three counts of attempted capital murder, police said.

The shootout is the second involving San Antonio police in three days.
On Wednesday, a police officer was injured and a home invasion suspect was killed during a shootout in the parking lot of an apartment complex on the city's Northwest Side.
Officer Nathan Becerra was struck once in the abdomen and once in the leg. Despite being wounded, Becerra managed to retreat for cover, and he and the other officer returned fire on the gunman, hitting him several times and killing him, police said.
