Tyler Jones' record-breaking night leads Texas State past UIW

Texas State beats Incarnate Word 48-17, Jones throws for school-record 475 yards

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Tyler Jones passed for a school-record 475 yards and a career-high five touchdowns and Texas State beat Incarnate Word 48-17 Saturday night.  

The Bobcats (2-2) were outscored 106-6 in their two previous games against then-No. 24 Arkansas and No. 6 Houston, but totaled 670 yards offense against the Cardinals (1-4), including a school-record 540 yards passing.

The Cardinals led on Broderick Reeves' 47-yard run in the opening quarter but Jones then threw scoring passes of 11 yards to Gabe Schrade, 44 to Thurman Morbley and 16 to Eric Luna for a 21-10 halftime lead. 

Jones, who finished 31-of-40 passing, added an 11-yard score to Schrade and a 46-yarder to PJ Anderson in the second half. Morbley finished with 133 yards on six catches.  

Anderson, a former San Antonio Taft High School standout, finished the game with three receptions for 76 yards and the long touchdown.

Desmond Hite rushed for 107 yards on eight carries for the Cardinals, including a 71-yard score.

The game was the first meeting between schools that are a 50-mile drive apart on Interstate 35.

The Bobcats begin Sunbelt Conference play next week on the road against Georgia State.

UIW hosts Sam Houston State next Saturday in a Southland Conference game.
